 Women for Women, International. Sponsor a women from a conflict affected area of the world (Rwanda, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq), for $27 a month and coorespond with her via mail. This is one of my favorite NGO's, that i support.

RAWA. Revolutionary Afghans Womens Association. Through this group and another group called Charity Help International, you can sponsor an Afghan child who is living in either an Orphanage in Afhganistan or a Refugee Camp in Pakistan. It's about $30 a month and you can coorespond with you child via e-mail. The kids are learning English in school so they get to practice their english on you!

Mine Advisory Group. This is a group that raises awareness about landmines around the world and they have ongoing projects to clear landmines from areas like Angola, Vietnam, etc.

Mentoring.org. At this website yuo can find more information about mentoring a young person in your area. They can connect you with organizations, and other resources to help you mentor a young person in your community.
